Graphic Design is Ubiquitous

Realize it or not all of us are exposed to graphic design one-way shape or form on a constant basis. The presence of graphic design is all around us. Trace your typical day to realize how prevalent graphic design is in our lives. Upon waking you grab the morning newspaper and right off the bat are exposed to all aspects of graphic design. There is the branded publication itself, developed by a designer, the various sections within it, the ads and special inserts. Next you turn on your phone and are inundated with many examples of graphic design, from the phone itself, the interface, mobile websites and certainly all the apps that were all developed by a graphic designer. You hop on the train and are exposed to a plethora of graphic design examples, from train posters to signage and billboards. If you are in your car, you notice the road signage and if you are on a highway, most likely will see huge billboards, some digital. Walking to work in the city and you can't get away from graphic design, from the store signage to the dramatic digital billboards.

You pass a shopper and you notice a branded shopping bag from a trendy store or someone drinking a cup of coffee with the coffees shop logo branded on the cup. You get to work turn on the computer and your computer boots up with your companies website and intranet. You might do some online shopping on an ecommerce website. All created by graphic designers. At lunch you might read from a printed or  e-book. If you go shopping at lunchtime and pop into a store you notice the packaged products, store displays and signage each vying for your attention. You come home from a hard day at the office and go to the mailbox and eagerly sift through all the mail that was created by a graphic designer. After woofing down dinner, you turn on the TV and guess what…. more graphic design examples, from motion graphics that illustrate your favorite news show or the opening and closing credits of a movie, all developed by graphic designers.

And It Doesn't Stop There

Think about the many people who play a supporting role to the graphic designer such as photographers, illustrators, animators, multi media developers, textile designers and more. And you realize that the business of graphic design is huge. A graphic designer, formally known as a commercial artist creates design for commercial purposes. Its main goal is to brand, communicate and help tell the story of the product that it represents. According to the department of labor, in 2012 there were over 260,000 graphic artists in the US and over 24% were self-employed. There is no denying their impact on society and more importantly their influence that they have on most of us. Becoming graphic designer is indeed an exciting profession and more diverse and exciting then it ever has been. Being hired by a client as a graphic designer is even more exciting. The trust that a client places in you and your creative talents to help communicate their business message is a privilege.
