The Getting Started Process

Still thinking about it? Ready to begin? Already on your way? Up and running but missed something? Regardless of what phase you’re in, starting a business is a process and it requires determination and flexibility. Expect some starts and stops – and the unexpected. A business can have a life of its own!

Educate Yourself

The logistics, time and cost of starting a business can be significant. The areas in this section include choosing a business name, legal considerations, developing a business plan, finances, and where to set up shop. While reviewing this material you should also start a dialog with someone already running a business. An attorney, CPA or business consultant that specializes in the type of business you’re starting will be especially helpful and insure that what you’re doing is legal. Look for additional information from other sources until you find the answers you need.

Know Yourself

Some people have a lot of business acumen and the ability to charge ahead and get around every obstacle while others may get stalled. Your existing knowledge, background, personality type, luck, how well you transition and resources will affect your ability to get your business up and running. Study the qualities of others that are successful in business for inspiration. Do your best. If the process becomes overwhelming and you get discouraged, remember that many business owners have faced incredible odds. If you are very ambitious but are confronted with a lot of problems or doubts, you may choose to alter your business model, change timing or something in between the two.

Know Others

Are you accountable only to yourself or do you have partners or employees assisting you? If you have investors to keep notified you should have a clear understanding of what their expectations are. If you’re working with others, you should know their capabilities, what they are responsible for, and what your expectations are. If you have help, you can divide tasks or assign them to the most qualified person. Additionally, more heads are better than one especially if you’re troubleshooting. Having a trusted advisor you can call when you encounter something that you don’t understand can help you make the best decision.

Pace Yourself

If you just got a terrific idea and are rolling full speed ahead, some of the tasks and necessary requirements that are set forth in this section will probably slow you down. Starting a business involves a lot of nitty-gritty work. This is where the actual details, basic facts, elements and all the issues come into play. The amount of time you need to get up and running will vary and may depend on licenses or permits you need. Choosing what to do first varies business to business. Once you have an understanding of what’s involved you can prioritize, plan and take action. Set goals and keep assessing your progress to stay on track.
