Logo Trends of 2017

Five logo design trends to look out for in 2017 and the upcoming years.

A logo is a direct reflection of your company and without a great logo, a brand can easily fall into obscurity. With so much competition out there, a well-designed logo is a must in order to set your business apart from the rest. A logo should both be visually appealing for the time as well as aim to be an image that can withstand the tests of time. A good logo must walk the very fine line between timelessness and trendiness; if that sounds challenging to you, don’t worry… it is. Trends are always changing and while some make great stylistic choices, others will give you a headache in twenty years (remember the 90s, anyone?). The best one can do is stay on top of the latest trends and understand which visual choices will best suite your brand for the immediate and long-term future.

CS Designworks has compiled five logo design trends to look out for in 2017 and the upcoming years.

Minimalism

Minimalism is trending today as consumer’s need for instant gratification grows and grows. When your brand only has a few seconds to grab someone’s attention, minimalism is your best bet. Designers are always asking themselves, “What is the simplest, quickest, and most effective way to convey our message?” Minimalism is increasingly becoming the answer to this question. As your diet app tells you, less is more. By removing all the bells and whistles and the unnecessary details, minimalism is able to deliver the essentials of your brand. For example, Mastercard and airbnb both rebranded, exchanging visually busy logos for simpler, streamlined logos. What do you think about the new designs?

Flat Design

A term used to describe a simple style void of any stylistic elements such as gradients, shadows, textures, or any other 3D elements, Flat Design is a trend that has it’s roots dating back all the way to the Bauhuas Movement of the 1920s. This trend is everywhere now and more and more logos are being redesigned to fit this simplistic, flat trend. A derivative of the minimalist style, flat design is clean, elegant, and gets straight to the point when conveying a message.

Handmade Logos

We just spent the past two trends raving about, “simple, simple, simple!” but now we are going to talk about a trend that is stepping away from the modern notions of minimalism. Hand-made logos and branding are making a come back with a modern twist, delivering a nostalgic, vintage feel that fits in the modern day. For a long time, there has been hesitancy towards hand drawn design due to the difficulties in translating the elements to a digital version. But with the evolution of scanners, light pens, ad vector tracing these problems are no longer holding designers back. These style logos are great for standing out amongst the sea of minimalist designs and allow for a lot more personality to shine through. One industry that almost exclusively uses handwritten logos is the craft brewery industry; well known for artisanal, handmade, and unique products, what better way to represent this brand than with a handmade logo.

Line Art

If you’re looking for a happy medium between a minimalist logo and a hand-drawn design, the line art trend might be the style for you. Characterized by a line with unchanging thickness used to draw simple but recognizable images. Frequently paired with a logotype or text, this style logo provides a modern and elegant style with a slightly more illustrative feel.

Geometric Shapes

Geometric logos are both fun for designers to create as well as for customers to look at. From circles to polygons to all those other shapes you forgot about since high school, the geometric style trend is popping in all types of design. The use of various shapes and forms have allowed for the creation of many a distinct and unusual, yet stylish logos. A good example of this trend is the Medium logo, which is comprised of several shapes to form a seemingly three-dimensional “M”.

With this quick glance at the trending design styles of today, hopefully this will help to equip your brand to create a beautiful logo.
